Battery Sergeant Major, Royal Field Artillery, 1865

INDIAN MUTINY SERVICE: "V" BATTERY 1/6 ROYAL ARTILLERY.

MOOLTAN:

On 2nd Sept., 1858 the 62nd & 69th Bengal Native Infantry Regiments together with 4/3 Bengal Horse Artillery, mutinied and rose against the garrison at Mooltan consisting of Bombay Fusileers and "V" Battery, 1/6 R.A. (Major J. Singleton).

Mooltan remained quiet till Sept. 1858, when the infantry of the garrison was reduced to the Bombay Fusileers, it contained no cavalry, but "V" Batt, 1/6 Royal Artillery and had just arrived from England.

The 62nd and 69th Bengal N/I still inhabited the native lines, where latterly the men of 4/3 Bengal H/Artillery were ordered to camp beside them. On the morning of 2nd Sept., without any ostensible cause they all rose and armed themselves with long posts and sticks, having hatchets, hammers fastened on the ends they made a sudden onslaught  on the artillery quarter guard, with the the evident intention of possessing themselves of the field-guns.

Major Singleton, who was on the spot, ordered (2) guns into action with case shot and scattered one party of the rebels. Another body of rebels made a rush to the stables, buy they were met and dispersed by the Bombay Fusileers. Others approached the stables by another route and succeeded in killing and wounding several drivers and syces, before they were driven off by 2nd/Captain A.H.W. Williams, R.A. and a mixed detachment of gunners and infantry.

A third party of rebels came under shrapnel fire from Capt. Singleton's guns and were at once put to flight, but very few escaped with their lives.
