GSM // RADFAN //SCARCE // This medal is from a collection from a man who was at Rafdan. MEDAL NAMED TO: 23735667. TPR. G.R. TRUNDLE. 4th. ROYAL TAKK REGT. CLASP: RADFAN CONDITION: EF. The Radfan clasp was awarded to British units for service in the Radfan Mountains, Aden, between April 25 and July 31, 1964, and which fought against the Radfan tribesmen who were supported by Yemen and Egyptian agents. 1955-1967 // The British involvement in Radfan began during the Aden Crisis, with rebels using the Dhala road to bring down supplies for the terrorists in Aden. The British Army took the decision to deploy a garrison into the Radfan to limit the rebels supplies and thus the Radfan tribesmen's ability to blackmail the traders. The Radfan tribesmen were aided and supplied by the Yemenis, who themselves had received aid and supplies from the Egyptians, and soon had Dhala under daily attack. According to the Commanding Officer of 45 Commando, Lt-Colonel Paddy Stevens, the tribesmen of the Radfan were 'a xenophobic lot, equipped from boyhood with rifles, who regarded the British arrival in their mountains as an opportunity for target practice'. The tribesmen mined the road from Aden and ambushed Army convoys, they made the position of the British and Federal garrison as difficult as possible. The usual method of aerial leaflet drops and bombings could not be employed following worldwide critical reaction against similar Egyptian tactics in the Yemen, so the task of counter-attacks was left to the infantry. There was an unpleasant aftermath to the Radfan Campaign. The Arabs had taken the bodies of Captain Edwards and his radio operator (both members of A Squadron 22 SAS) who had been killed in a ambush earlier in the campaign. The bodies were taken to Taiz where they were decapitated and the heads displayed in the market place. The British presence continued for another two years, with the British troops leaving, once Makawee had been removed from power in Aden and the Federal Army made responsible for security. |

SCARCE // A BRITISH EMPIRE MILITARY GVI (MILTARY) Named to: 16216735. Sgt. WILLIAM. H.J. WEBB. RA. Sgt. Webb 475 Battery, 132 Heavy Anti Aircraft Regt. Royal Artillery. His BEM award for "Operaion Diver" countermeasures against the German V1 Flying Bomb between the period October 1944 and January 1945. 1939/45 STAR, FRANCE & GERMANY STAR. DEFENCE & WAR MEDALS. UNNAMED AS ISSUED. Condition: GVF. Comes with copy of London Gazette entry and headers. BEM LONDON GAZETTE 10 APRIL 1945 "IN RECOGNITION OF MERITORIOUS SERVICES" The recommendation states... "The NCO has carried out his duties with 457 Battery during the Diver deployment with the utmost zeal and cheerfulness. During the rush periods of moves, and under the most trying conditions, Sgt. Webb has by his cheerfulness and hard work been an wxample to all, and has shown most marked powers of leadership, inspiring his men and the greatest possible effort". Operation Diver was the British codename for the countermeasures against the German V1 Flying Bomb campaign launched by the Luftwaffe in 1944 against London and other areas of Britain. Anti Aircraft guns were deployed in serval movements first in mid June 1944 to the South coast of England then a cordon closing the Thames Estuary to attach from the east. In sept. 1944 a new defence line was formed on the coast of East Anglia and in December 1944 a further line along the Lincolnshire and Yorkshire coast. The deployments were prompted by the ever changing approach tracks which were influenced by the Allies advance throughout Europe. On 13 June 1944 the first V1 Flying Bomb hit London over the next nine months more would follow. AA Gunners found the V1 hard to hit the small fast moving target on average would take 2,500 rounds to bring it down. The award of the BEM covers the period of Oct. 1944 to Jan. 1954.

An example of this attitude was the night of the SAS raid on Pebble Island, when atrocious weather and winds of up to 75 knots forced the escorts to slow leaving HMS HERMES to proceed alone. Notwithstanding the conditions, which were way outside the limits for helicopter operations, Lieutenant Commander Squier unhesitatingly led his men to provide necessary anti submarine defence and surface warning for the Carrier so that operations could continue. The Squadron lost two aircraft during the Falklands operation induced by operational flying pressure and without loss of life, but resolution remained remarkably firm. The great courage and outstanding contribution of Lieutenant Commander Squier's large Squadron with 60 Aircrew, stems from the superb personal example he as a Commanding Officer set by his own calm and dedicated bravery in the air'. |

SCARCE GROUPING South Atlantic Medal with Rosette, Campaign Service Medal GULF and Long Service & Good Conduct Medal to Master at Arms M J 'Walley' Hammond, Royal Navy who served aboard HMS Glamorgan during the Falklands War, severely damaged by a land launched Exorcet Missile on 12 June 1982, Glamorgan lost thirteen of her crew killed and many more wounded
South Atlantic Medal with Rosette RPO M J Hammond D101172E HMS Glamorgan Campaign Service Medal E2 clasp GULF (comes with original box of issue with paper inside) AMAA M J Hammond D101172E Long Service & Good Conduct Medal E2 Royal Navy RPO M J Hammond D101172E RN Condition: NEF . The South Atlantic Medal and Long Service & Good Conduct Medal mounted as originally worn the Campaign Service Medal clasp GULF in named card box of issue his rating Acting Master at Arms. At the start of the Falklands campaign Glamorgan was already at sea off Gibraltar about to take part in exercises, she was immediately diverted to join the main Royal Navy task force, and served as flagship for Admiral Sandy Woodward during the voyage south until 15 April, when he transferred his flag to HMS Hermes. Her most useful armament proved to be her remaining twin 4.5-inch (114 mm) guns, which were used primarily to shell enemy positions on shore.Glamorgan was first in action on the evening and night of 1 May when she joined forces with HMS Arrow and HMS Alacrity to bombard Argentine positions around Stanley. The three British ships soon came under attack by three IAI Jagger Jets; two 500 lb bombs fell close alongside Glamorgan, causing minor underwater damage. On 14 May she was again in action, this time supporting British special forces on Pebble Island in the west of the Falklands, and for the next two weeks until the end of May she was almost continuously engaged bombarding various shore positions on the east of the islands mainly as part of a plan to distract attention from the landings at San Carlos Water but also against the airfield at Stanley and in support of British forces ashore. She even fired a Seaslug missile at the airstrip. At the beginning of June, the task force having been reinforced with other ships, Glamorgan was detached to protect shipping in the Towing, Repair and Logistics Area (TRALA), some 200 miles (320 km) away from the islands, but as the campaign reached a climax she was recalled in the evening of 11 June to support the Royal Marines fighting the Battle of Two Sisters.
Regulating Petty Officer (RPO) Hammond on board HMS Glamorgan Missile damage to the hanger of HMS Glamorgan thirteen of her crew were killed and many more wounded At 0637 the following morning, Saturday 12 June 1982, Glamorgan was attacked with an MM38 Exocet missile which was fired from an improvised shore-based launcher. The incoming Exocet missile was being tracked on both the bridge and operations room radar by the Principal Warfare Officer and Navigation Officer. Before the missile impact, the ship was moving at high speed, executing a turn fast enough to be able to turn rapidly away from the missile in the limited time available, a few seconds, the Exocet struck the port side adjacent to the hangar near the stern. The turn prevented the missile from striking the ship's side at right angles and penetrating, instead it hit the deck coaming at an angle, near to the port Seacat launcher, skidded on the deck and exploded. This made a 10ft by 15ft hole in the hangar deck and a 5ft by 4ft hole in the galley area below, where a fire started. The blast travelled forwards and down. The missile body, still travelling forwards, penetrated the hangar door, causing the fully fuelled and armed Wessex helicopter to explode and start a severe fire in the hangar. Thirteen crew members were killed and more wounded. The ship was under way again with all fires extinguished by 1000. On the following day, repairs were made at sea and, after the Argentinian surrender on 14 June, more extensive repairs were undertaken in the sheltered bay of San Carlos Water. She sailed for home on 21 June, and re-entered Portsmouth on 10 July 1982 after 104 days at sea.

SCARCE PAIR // South Atlantic Medal with Rosette SA O T Power D127800N HMS Brilliant Long Service & Good Conduct Medal Royal Navy E2 SA O T Power D127800N RN Condition: NEF HMS Brilliant (F90) was a Type 22 Frigate and during the Falklands War was commanded by Captain John Coward, Royal Navy who was awrded the DSO. The two helicopters carried by Brilliant attacked the Argentinian Submarine Sante Fe and was the first Royal Navy warship to fire the Sea Wolf Missile in action when on 12 May 1982 she shot down three Argentinian A-4 Skyhawk aircraft. On 21 May she came under Argentinian air attack outside San Carlos Water and was damaged by cannon fire. On 23 May she joined HMS Yarmouth in the chase for the Argentinian Supply Ship ARA Monsunen and rescued 24 survivors of Atlantic Conveyor when she was bombed. The recommendation for her Commanding Officer's DSO records............. 'He encouraged enemy air attack on several occasions by forming a gun line off Port Stanley with a Type 42 Destroyer and shot down several enemy aircraft. He siezed every opportunity to volunteer his ship for dangerous night raids through the Falklands Sound and assisted with several difficult missions to infiltrate special forces. He escorted the amphibious group into the amphibious operations area and was in the thick of the action during heavy air raids for the whole of D Day. Despite damage to his ship which effectively put most of his weapons systems out of action, he was determined to stay in the area for the second day and quite prepared to take on the enemy with whatever means remained at his disposal. Even on retiring from the amphibious operations area after the second day for essential defect repair, he managed to engage the Monsoonen (sic), a resupply vessel, and caused it to run aground after giving it suitable warning'.
