Manipur on the Assam-Burma border possessed its own army but had always
relied on British assistance against Burmese raids. Following the death of
the Raja in 1886 a dispute over succession arose (he had eight sons), one
son, Takendrajit Singh, had appointed himself Senaputti [commander of the
Manipur Army], deposed one of his brothers and installed another on the
throne.
In late February 1891, Mr. James Quinton, Chief Commissioner of Assam,
together with Lieutenant-Colonel Charles Skene and about 250 men of the 43rd
Gurkhas went to Manipur with the intention of removing the Senaputti.
Negotiation having failed, Skene attacked the city but after a counterattack
by the Manipuris, the British Force was forced to retreat and take refuge in
the Residency outside the city’s walls.
After a while a parley was agreed upon and a party including Quinton, Skene
and the British Resident, Frank Grimwood, went out to negotiate. All were
murdered.
The British Force, now without leaders, managed to escape from the Residency
with the Resident’s widow – Ethel Grimwood – who had been active throughout
the siege and now helped guide them to safety. For her great gallantry Mrs.
Grimwood received the insignia of the Royal Red Cross, a pension for life
and was fêted by Royalty.
The party reached Lakhipur on 20 March and three columns under Colonel R.H.F.
Rennick, Major-General H. Collett, CB and Brigadier-General T. Graham, CB,
raised. They converged on Manipur on 26 April to find that the palace had
been burnt and the ruler, the Senaputti and their brothers had fled. The
ruler, his brother Prince Angao Sana and the Senaputti were later captured
and tried. The Senaputti was executed and the others exiled to the Andaman
Islands.
One Victoria Cross was awarded for this campaign – to Lieutenant C.J.W.
Grant, Indian Staff Corps.
An interesting campaign with about 3,000 clasps (mostly to Indian troops)
being awarded 443 of them to the 4th battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle
Corps, the only British Regiment present.
