The battle of Firket comprised the first phase of the re-conquest of the Sudan resulting in the recapture of Dongola. On 2nd June 1896 headquarters were established at Akasha, from which the advance was continued, on 5th June, towards Firket, where the Emir Osman Azraq was defeated on 7th June 1896.

After the battle of Firket, the advance continued and reached Kerma on 19th September, Merowe, 26th September, and Dongola on 15th October 1896. Hafir is on the west bank of the Nile opposite Kerma, and it was here that the battle was fought. The clasp being awarded to those who took part in the operations south of Fareig, 19-26th September 1896.

The next stage of the conflict occurred during 1897, with the Sudan 1897 clasp, though not awarded for any specific action, being awarded to those who had already received the Khedive’s Medal and were south of Kerma and south of 6 Station between 15th July – 6th November 1897.

The clasp for Abu Hamed was given to those of Major General Sir A. Hunter’s Force which set out from Kassingar and captured Abu Hamed on 7th August 1897.
